Anniversary gifts by year
Each wedding anniversary has a traditional material, a custom that began with silver and gold in medieval Europe and grew into a full list in the twentieth century. Here is that list, with a thought for each year about making the gift personal.
The materials aren't rules. They're prompts. The best anniversary gifts take the year's idea, like paper for something new or wood for roots, and fill it with something only you could give.

How to make any year personal
Write something down. Whatever the material, a few honest sentences outlast the object. Name specific memories from the year: a place, a phrase, a small kindness.
Use what you already have. Your vows, old messages and cards are the richest material there is. Many couples reread their vows each anniversary; turning them into a vows portrait makes that a keepsake.
For parents and grandparents, gather words from the family. A few lines from each child and grandchild make a milestone feel shared. See gifts for parents' anniversaries.
